Roller Shutter garage doors are a very simple and popular form of garage door. Roller doors or Roller shutter garage doors are installed onto the rear of the brickwork opening. This is done to ensure the rather bulky roll is accommodated in the space behind the lintel. All roller doors need “headroom” to accommodate the door in the rolled up position.
Fitting on the back of the brickwork rather than in between brickwork, which is the “norm”, for up and over garage doors gives the benefit of full drive through width. No drive through width is lost by having a timber frame upright each side which up and over garage doors generally have.
Roller garage doors lift vertically which is ideal for short driveways and windy locations where an up and over garage door would be caught by the wind as it swings outwards and upwards to open.

The last few years have seen the rise in popularity of the insulated roller garage door. This door being made from individual foam filled slats can roll more tightly than the continuous curtain type so although it is a thicker door it rolls into a smaller diameter barrel when rolled up in the open position. Arridge Garage Doors sell the Aluroll insulated roller door which is a high quality door with a full box housing which makes the door visually very neat from both the inside and outside. SWS are the biggest insulated roller shutter door manufacturer in the UK making their own version of this door – the Securoglide. Cardale manufacture the Cardale Thermaglide insulated roller and Henderson make their version of the insulated roller as well. The key factor of this simple door is that the slats are made in a reputable factory. All our slats are German made to rigorously high standards. Cheap Chinese copies have worked their way into the market and many discount on-line garage door companies sell doors made from cheaper slats, guides and motors. Insulated roller doors should also have a full box housing to ensure it is draught proof at the top. Having a thick bottom rubber seal and monkey fur or rubber in the guides is not enough. What about the gap between the back of the lintel and the door curtain? All our doors have full box housings. The benefits of any roller door are that they do not take up any space in the garage when in the open position unlike sectional garage doors or canopy/retractable up and over garage doors. If the garage is being used as a gym, workshop or utility type room this additional space, which a roller door gives, is most welcome.
The disadvantage of a roller garage door perceived by some people is that they look industrial. The design is limited to horizontal slats.
